Being the reason for the smile on their faces - Athwela 19.1

Community Service Feb 16, 2019

As said by Lakshani Pathirage,

Athwela 19.1 was a lovely awakening for the elders at Shantha Sewana Hospice, Maharagama, who are no longer receiving the love and affection they deserve at the autumn of their lives. Shantha Sewana Hospice is home to the elders who are suffering from cancer and getting treatments from the cancer hospital. Currently, there are 25 elders at the premises, and amidst their unfortunate destiny, they all strive hard to live their lives to the fullest leaving all their grievances aside.

“To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honours.”
-Tia Walker-

Thus we at Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa, along with Interact Club of Mahanama College decided to lend a hand to these elders. The project comprised two phases. Firstly on 26th and 27th January, we had a painting session and made their wards more attractive. We also cleaned their wards attempting to make a better environment for them to live.

At the second phase, which was held on the 9th of February, we spent our time with the elders to show our love with a fun-filled evening coloured with musical tunes to cheer them up. Our team of Rotaractors and Interactors also donated dry foods and clothes. At last, we had evening tea with them.

One of the most precious and memorable gifts we gifted them was the three beautiful paintings which were drawn by none other than our very own talented Rotaractors.

“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”- Saint Theresa

Finally, we are glad to say that we completed the project more successfully than we ever expected and had a great time with them.
