Helping Hands: "Serving before Self"

The journey of Helping Hands will be continued in each of their steps until they find a light permanently.

Helping Hand phase 3 was successfully completed on 17th of January 2016 at Vaikarai medical hospital, Vavuniya with the support of Omega Line Private Limited and some individuals who were more than willing to serve the people at this hospital.

Vaikarai is having spinal cord injured people who are outcast from the normal human society and living alone with the help of others at a small wooden building without proper basic facilities. Spinal cord injury (SCI) is an unspeakable injury to the spinal cord resulting in a change, either temporary or permanent, in the cord’s normal motor, sensory, or autonomic function. Helping Hands is a first Rotaract community service program at Tamil area for making a change in physically and mentally in disabled people who are still in dark and depression by their disability.

Phase 1 and phase 2 of Helping Hands were carried out in last year with the contribution and dedication of the team members by aiding fun events, some basic needs and small gifts. As we found some problems of construction at the building, we repaired the doors and windows which were severely damaged by the weather. It seems the world change not for them but also us by talking with them individually.

Some of them were affected by war and some them are accidents. Most of them are dejected by their own families; their mind was frustrated about their life. Though we cannot heal their disability but our presence did something to make them laugh and they were happy with us.

Throughout each sessions of this project we tried some guidance to give some strength in mentally and physically for them. True guidance is a small torch in a dark forest, it doesn’t show everything once. But it gives enough light for the next to be safe.
