As I gazed into the eyes of my flock of students, I could almost picture myself in their shoes. Few years back, I was just like them; struggling to work my way through the nuances of a foreign language. Thus, volunteering at “Illuminate 2015”, a project aimed at improving the English Language skills of the students who would be facing their Ordinary Level examination, is a special experience for me.
Initiated by Rotaract Club of University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa, “Illuminate 2015” strives to help the students of Dudley Senanayake College, Narahenpita, since majority of its students are from underprivileged communities.
Under the guidance ofthe Education Ministry of Sri Lanka, the students are provided with revision on lessons stipulated for the ordinary level examination. Apart from the sessions on developing English language skills, the students participate in interactive mentoring sessions during the monthly workshops we carry out.
Reading the testimonials we received, we feel happy to be a part of a cause much greater than ourselves. It isn’t only about teaching prepositions or grammar rules; it is also about encouraging youngsters to stand up with confidence and discover the skills that lie deep within. Sometimes, teaching right from the basics is daunting. Yet, it is definitely worth it; since to brighten their tomorrows is to brighten a whole new world.
