"Knowledge has no value unless you use and share it." - Grama Prabodhaya 2018/19 - Inspirer and Intellect
As told by Rtr. Dinooli Uduwarage
Have you ever felt the happiness of teaching something to someone, who does not know it? That is what we did at “Inspirer” and “Intellect”, which marked the initiation of the signature Community Service project of Rotaract Mora, “Grama Prabodhaya” for the year 2019. Starting from 13th October 2018, we Rotaractors got together at Hambegamuwa area to share the knowledge that aided us to come this long way until our university life with the students who dream of following our path.
‘Knowledge is like money: to be of value it must circulate, and in circulating it can increase in quantity and, hopefully, in value.’
Louis L. Amour
The efforts of our team were to help the youngsters in Hambegamuwa area to get through the GCE O/L examination by excelling at the subjects; Mathematics, Science and English Language. The project “Intellect”, was conducted for teaching the essentials of Mathematics and Science, while “Inspirer” was conducted for helping them to grasp the fundamentals of English Language.
Both projects were held at Hambegamuwa Janapada Kanishta Vidyalaya, where students from nearby schools participated in the two-day sessions during weekends. Fundamentals of each subject were first taught to them, followed by the discussion of model papers and past papers The sessions comprised motivational videos to energize the students and games that encouraged the students to put theoretical knowledge into practice and improve their thinking skills. The interactive presentations which delivered the subject content were able to help the students to grasp the subject content with enthusiasm.
The level of their knowledge and education was remarkable despite the limited resources they had, and most of the students had the potential to earn good grades in the examination. All that they needed from us were some tips and tricks to face an examination paper with confidence. Our team of Rotaractors were also dedicated to providing much attentive guidance to whomever in need of it. We were really content to see their improvement in writing answers to the model papers, as they have indeed grabbed the fruits of the plants that we took efforts to plant and grow.
‘Sharing knowledge is not about giving people something or getting something from them. That is only valid for information sharing. Sharing knowledge occurs when people are genuinely interested in helping one another develop new capacities for action; it is about creating a learning process.’
Peter Senge
We felt genuine happiness in our hearts for putting our efforts to help a blooming generation, encouraging them to reach high in the ladder of education and developing their capacities to dream and realize their future in a new dimension.
