They Long to be Loved

Children are always attention seekers, explorers and adorable creatures by every means. They deserve all the good in the world. Hence they should be well fed, protected, educated and released to the society. Children have well defined rights. The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) of 1989 characterizes a child as any human individual who has not reached the age of eighteen years. Children’s rights incorporate their right to association with both parents, human identity as well as the fundamental requirements for physical protection, food, universal state-paid education, health care, and criminal laws appropriate for the age and development of the child, equal protection of the child’s civil rights, and freedom from discrimination on the basis of the child’s race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion, disability, colour, ethnicity or any other characteristics.

So take a moment and think… Do all the children own a perfect life? Do all the children have at least a minute percentage of what we have? The answer is an understandable NO. Thousands of our children lead gloomy lives in streets and children’s homes with no optimism at all. Most of them do not even know what the real world looks like.

Developed countries have made sure that the significant amount of their children are taken care of the way they are supposed to, but when it comes to third world countries like Sri Lanka, we have not been able to reach the standards required. Miserable aspect has been their education since some do not even get proper preliminary schooling which makes the problem even worse as education is a deciding factor of one’s future. If we can make efforts to take part in uplifting educational status of these young kids providing whatever we are capable of, it would not only enrich their lives but also will play a huge role in bridging the gap among social classes.

Understanding the significance of such effort, we as the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa are always pleased to contribute in sustainable development of children under the theme ‘Let Them Shine’, offering the very best in every facet such as education and health and helping young and innocent souls rise up and shine in the society.
