Woof Roof: Every life deserves love, no matter the condition
Not every wagging tail tells a story of joy, some carry stories of survival, pain and resilience. Yet, even in the face of hardship, they continue to love unconditionally.
Woof Roof is a project which is organized by the Environmental Avenue of Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa, aimed at supporting disabled animals, especially dogs, by providing food, medicine and care. As a part of this initiative, we focused on a non-profit organization, the “Baw Baw Animal Welfare Center”, a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing and caring for disabled animals.
From the moment we stepped in, it was clear that this place was not just a shelter, it was a home. A home filled with hope, love, courage and countless untold stories. Many of the animals we met were physically disabled, some unable to walk, some are blind, others are recovering from injuries. But what stood out the most was not their condition; it was their spirit.
As we stepped down from our vehicle, we were immediately greeted by a chorus of barks, as if they were warmly welcoming us into their home. Among them was a little puppy named “Chuku”, who had only three legs. Despite his condition, he ran towards me with his tail wagging happily, offering the sweetest welcome I had ever seen.
“Chuku” then led us all the way inside, as if guiding us through his world. At the doorstep, many other dogs with different disabilities were waiting to greet us. Yet, in that moment, their disabilities seemed to disappear. What truly stood out was their warmth, their joy, and their pure, unconditional love.
We also came across many paralyzed dogs who were unable to walk due to spinal injuries or weakened back legs. It was heartbreaking to see their condition, yet deeply inspiring to witness their strength. The shelter had thoughtfully provided special enclosures with smooth flooring, designed to ensure their comfort and make their daily care easier. Even in such circumstances, these beautiful souls continued to show resilience, reminding us that their spirits remain unbroken despite their physical limitations.
We were given the opportunity to offer them food and, more importantly, love. Spending time with them, petting them, and simply being there was an experience filled with pure happiness. In return, they gave us the warmest love and joy one could ever feel.
There was a kind of sincerity in their gestures that words can hardly describe something so genuine that even humans rarely express. Their bright, joyful eyes told stories not of pain, but of resilience and love.
Our project raised funds through the sale of stickers, and every single contribution from the students of our university truly made a difference. Their support paid off, as the project turned out to be a great success.
This experience was more than just a visit, it was a lesson in empathy, gratitude and responsibility. It made us realize how important it is to stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves.
As we left, one thing stayed with us, their resilience. They may be limited in body, but their hearts know no bounds. And in loving them, we learned what true kindness really means.
