SLRMUN and the SDGs: How SLRMUN Turns Youth Dialogue Into Real Change

Blogged Bliss Apr 08, 2026

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)  are often discussed in reports and classrooms, but at SLRMUN, they come to life through debate, dialogue, and action. As an Organizing Committee member, I witnessed how youth-led dialogue on global challenges is shaping actionable initiatives in communities across Sri Lanka.

The 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals: A Sri Lankan Perspective Through SLRMUN

In 2015, the United Nations introduced the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These goals serve as a global call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all.

For countries like Sri Lanka, the SDGs reflect challenges we face every day from economic inequality and climate vulnerability to education, health, and sustainable development. Sustainable development is not optional; it is necessary. The SDGs provide a framework for progress, linking economic growth, social equity, environmental protection, and peace. Universities, youth organizations, and community initiatives play a crucial role in translating these global goals into local action, and informed dialogue creates a ripple effect that strengthens society at every level.

SLRMUN has shown that when young people are given the tools to discuss, debate, and propose solutions, change is possible. The SDGs are no longer distant ideals; they are guiding frameworks shaping our present decisions and our future.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals

1. No Poverty

Despite progress, poverty remains a concern, particularly in rural and estate sectors. Sustainable livelihoods and social protection are key.

2. Zero Hunger

Malnutrition and food insecurity still affect vulnerable communities, highlighting the need for resilient agriculture and fair food distribution.

3. Good Health and Well-Being

Sri Lanka’s free healthcare system is a strength, but challenges remain in mental health, non-communicable diseases, and rural access.

4. Quality Education

While literacy rates are high, gaps in digital access, resources, and higher education opportunities persist.

5. Gender Equality

Progress has been made, yet issues such as workplace inequality, gender-based violence, and underrepresentation remain.

6. Clean Water and Sanitation

Access to clean drinking water is still a concern in areas affected by CKDu and drought.

7. Affordable and Clean Energy

Sri Lanka is moving toward renewable energy, but stronger investment in solar, wind, and hydro is essential.

8. Decent Work and Economic Growth

Youth unemployment and informal employment underline the need for sustainable, inclusive economic policies.

9. Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure

Developing resilient infrastructure and encouraging innovation are vital for long-term growth.

10. Reduced Inequalities

Regional disparities and income gaps require targeted development strategies.

11. Sustainable Cities and Communities

Urban congestion, waste management, and housing challenges are increasing, especially in Colombo and surrounding areas.

12. Responsible Consumption and Production

Plastic pollution and waste disposal remain major concerns across the island.

13. Climate Action

Sri Lanka is highly vulnerable to climate change, facing floods, landslides, and rising temperatures.

14. Life Below Water

Overfishing and marine pollution threaten coastal livelihoods and biodiversity.

15. Life on Land

Deforestation and habitat loss continue to affect wildlife and ecosystems.

16. Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions

Good governance, transparency, and accountability are essential for sustainable development.

17. Partnerships for the Goals

Collaboration between government, private sector, academia, and civil society is critical for progress.

A Reflection from the Organizing Committee: Experiencing SDGs Through SLRMUN

Being part of the Organizing Committee at SLRMUN ‘26 offered a unique vantage point. Unlike delegates, our role was neutral: facilitating, observing, and ensuring smooth debate. Yet, this perspective allowed us to witness the SDGs come alive through dialogue.

In GA3, discussions on the protection of refugees and internally displaced persons highlighted the human cost of conflict. Observing delegates navigate humanitarian law and ethical responsibility reinforced how closely SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) are connected. Displacement is more than a statistic; it represents disrupted lives, paused futures, and fractured communities.

The Security Council debates on U.S. military intervention in Venezuela and the Responsibility to Protect doctrine demonstrated the delicate balance between sovereignty, power, and peace, directly connecting to SDG 16. These discussions emphasized that maintaining international stability requires informed, responsible diplomacy.

Through UNEP, conversations on urban sustainability and environmentally driven displacement reflected Sri Lanka’s own challenges with floods, landslides, and rapid urbanization. These discussions highlighted the real-world relevance of SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities)and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

In ECOSOC, debates on gendered labour inequality and sovereign debt distress revealed structural imbalances in the global economy. Delegates explored how development, equality, and economic resilience must move forward together, reflecting SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

Meanwhile, GA1’s focus on biological weapons and chemical disarmament reminded everyone that global security extends beyond traditional conflicts, again linking to SDG 16.

Witnessing these discussions reinforced that the SDGs are deeply interconnected. They are frameworks guiding solutions, shaping policy thinking, and inspiring action. Facilitating these debates reminded us that youth engagement, awareness, and dialogue are essential building blocks for sustainable change.

●      Beyond the Conference: From Dialogue to Action

The impact of SLRMUN doesn’t end when the conference closes. Resolutions, ideas, and debates from the sessions are actively channeled into Cognizant, SLRMUN’s flagship implementation arm. Cognizant ensures that youth-led dialogue drives tangible change, translating conference discussions into initiatives that benefit communities across Sri Lanka.

Following SLRMUN ‘26, several projects will be launched reflecting the priorities highlighted during the conference. These initiatives show that dialogue can become action, and action can create measurable impact.

Cognizant tracks the implementation of key recommendations, ensuring youth voices are not just heard but actively shape policymaking, community development projects, and advocacy campaigns. This demonstrates that SLRMUN is more than a simulation; it is a launchpad for meaningful change, where informed discussion translates directly into tangible, youth-driven initiatives.

●      The Journey Continues

SLRMUN ‘26 demonstrated that meaningful change begins not just with policy but with discussion, understanding, and collaboration. From an Organizing Committee perspective, facilitating these debates reinforced that supporting youth-led dialogue is itself a step toward a sustainable and equitable future.

Through Cognizant, these discussions now influence real projects, initiatives, and community programs. What delegates debated in GA3, SC, UNEP, ECOSOC, and GA1 is now informing tangible actions in Sri Lanka. The conference proves that dialogue, when guided by knowledge and purpose, can become action, and youth engagement is a powerful driver of sustainable change.

The last day of the conference is not the end of the journey; it is the beginning of translating ideas into impact, demonstrating how informed, responsible, and committed youth can shape a fairer, safer, and more resilient world.
