WoofRoof: The Pawfect Adventure
Who doesn’t love dogs, right? They’re cute, loyal, and full of love. But street dogs don’t always get the attention they deserve. So, when the chance came to do something meaningful for them, Sahan, Lithasa and I teamed up with the Environmental Service Avenue of Rotaract Club of university of moratuwa to initiate "WoofRoof", a project all about raising awareness and spreading love for these furry friends.
Back then, Hiruni akka (who is now our awesome president) was the director of the Environmental Service Avenue, and she played a huge part in making this project come to life. Under her guidance and with our combined efforts, we kicked things off with a street dog photography competition. The idea was simple but fun: students were invited to submit their best street dog photos, competing in three exciting categories. The photos people sent were amazing. Some were funny, some heartwarming, and all of them showed just how lovable street dogs really were. The winners were rewarded with gift vouchers, and honestly, it was so much fun going through the entries and seeing everyone’s creativity and passion shine.
But that wasn’t all. We also organized a dog sticker-selling campaign to raise funds for the Baw Baw Shelter in Kurunegala. And let me tell you, those stickers were adorable! People loved them, and the campaign turned out to be awesome and a huge success. Selling those stickers felt great because we knew every rupee was going towards helping those sweet dogs at the shelter.
The best part of the project came later when we actually visited the Baw Baw Shelter to hand over the donations.
The train ride there was a blast, filled with laughter, silly conversations, and good vibes all around. Huge shoutout to Himash ayya, Danasi, Thisas, and Sandali, who joined us and made the trip even more fun and memorable. When we finally arrived, things got even better. The people running the shelter were so kind, and the dogs? Oh my gosh, they were the cutest! We got to bathe some of them, pet them, and just spend quality time with them. Seeing how happy and well-cared-for they were made every bit of our effort feel so worth it.
And let me not forget the cherry on top, the treat Hiruni akka surprised us with! I'm not sure if it was the food or just the fun vibes we had as a team, but it’s one of those memories that makes me smile every time I think about it.
Looking back, WoofRoof wasn’t just about helping dogs (though that was, of course, our main goal). It was also about working together as a team, sharing laughs, and making unforgettable memories. It’s crazy how a simple idea like a dog photo contest turned into such a meaningful and heartwarming experience.
If there’s one thing, I learned from WoofRoof, it’s that even small efforts can make a big difference. Whether it’s a cute sticker, a shared photo, or a train ride to somewhere new, everything we do adds up to create something special. And trust me, there’s no better feeling than knowing you’ve made a little corner of the world better, for humans and dogs alike.
So, here’s to WoofRoof, the project that made their tails wag and our hearts full.
