ROTARACT CLUB OF UNIVERSITY OF MORATUWA
‘Rotaract’ is an international movement that fosters volunteering services to society. It is one of the two sub-movements which stems from the movement ‘Rotary’, while the other is ‘Interact’. The Interact movement provides a platform for children aged 12 to 18 to gather and engage in various service activities. Similarly, the Rotaract movement focuses on bringing together the youth aged 18 to 30 to be involved in service. Both these movements are monitored and guided by the movement Rotary. The main body responsible for the functioning of all three movements is ‘Rotary International’. All three movements follow the motto ‘Service Above Self’, which creates the foundation for all three movements. The word "Rotaract" came to life in year 1962 when Rotary International combined the words ‘Rotary’ and ‘Interact’. However, Rotaract primarily stands for ‘Rotary in Action’.
Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa also known as Rotaract Mora, has brought immense pride to the University through its extensive services rendered for the past 29 years, since its inception in the year 1995. Rotaract Mora belongs to the Rotaract District 3220, which includes all Rotaract clubs in Sri Lanka and Maldives. The club has been recognized as the very first university-based Rotaract club in Sri Lanka. Rotaract Mora commenced its activities with just 16 members in the initial stages, under the leadership of the Charter President Rtr. Nishan Weerasooriya.
The club has been able to have a positive impact on the lives of many individuals and also on the environmental system of Sri Lanka, through various significant projects carried out by the club during the past years. As a Rotaract club, we always strive to foster service to the society we have been surrounded by. However, Rotaract Mora goes a step further and ensures that the members of the club are molded into better human beings and leaders through the experiences gained by being involved in the club.
Rotaract Mora comprises five main avenues of services as well as five secondary avenues. All activities carried out by the club focus on one or more of the main avenues. Namely, Community service, Club service, Professional Development, International service, and Environmental service. Furthermore, the secondary avenues of the club are Membership Development, Sports, IT, Editorial, and Public Relations.
Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa has received a number of international awards for the services rendered to society. Some of the most significant projects which received international recognition are the project ‘Grama Prabodhaya’, which paved the way for the club to receive the award for International Single Club Winner at the Rotaract Outstanding Project Awards 2016/17. It was the very first time a Sri Lankan club had won this valuable award. Moreover, the project ‘Zooxanthellae’ was able to receive notable recognition as South Asia Regional Winner at the Rotaract Outstanding Project Awards 2018/19.
We, at Rotaract Mora, always strive to create a positive impact in the society we live in, while fostering development for the members of our esteemed club. During this RI year, we stress the importance of inspiring future generations through the good deeds carried out by our club by staying true to our theme ‘Serving Today, Inspiring Tomorrow’.
