Clean Scape: Revitalizing Moratuwa Railway Station An Initiative by the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa
Introduction to Clean Scape
The Clean Scape project is a proud initiative organized by the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa under the Environmental Services Avenue. Recognizing the vital importance of clean public spaces and a sustainable environment for urban well-being, the team selected the Moratuwa Railway Station as the primary focus for this project. As one of the busiest transit hubs in the area, the station serves thousands of commuters daily. Our main objective was to restore the cleanliness of the station, transforming it into a welcoming, hygienic, and visually appealing place for everyone.

The Clean-Up Operation
Tackling a project of this scale required incredible hard work, meticulous planning, and seamless teamwork. On the day of the project, a large group of enthusiastic volunteers gathered at the station. Armed with garbage bags, protective gloves, and cleaning equipment, the team divided into smaller groups to cover every corner of the premises. As seen in the project photographs, they worked tirelessly to clear overgrown weeds, debris, and plastic litter safely from around the railway tracks. Furthermore, they meticulously swept the main passenger platforms and scrubbed the areas near the station's beautiful murals, removing years of accumulated grime. Every task, big or small, highlighted the power of collective youth effort and shared responsibility.

Community Impact & Sustainable Proposals
The positive impact on the local community was immediate and profound. Commuters arriving the following morning were greeted by a spotless, refreshed environment, bringing smiles and a renewed sense of civic pride to daily travelers. Beyond the visible cleanliness achieved on the clean-up day, our team proposed practical, long-term solutions. We proposed setting up new, clearly labeled waste sorting bins around the station to encourage proper waste disposal and recycling, ensuring that the station remains clean for years to come.
The Road Ahead
Looking ahead, we hold great expectations for the future of environmental conservation in our community. The Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa plans to conduct similar large-scale environmental projects, expanding our reach to other public spaces and transport hubs across the country. By taking these continuous, actionable steps, we hope to foster a cleaner, greener society and inspire more young leaders to take charge of protecting our shared environment.
