“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

– Mother Teresa

It seems as though people are always trying to achieve total happiness in life. And every person has a right to the happiness. But unfortunately few people in this world do not deserve that happiness. It is not because of their own fault. It’s because a disease that the whole world fear for.

Hand in Hand was primarily focused on aiding the child cancer patients by providing monetary and non-monetary support to the Apeksha Hospital – Maharagama. This was reinforced by a painting session held on the 22nd March 2016 at the children play area of the hospital. More than 60 Rotaractors from Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa spent the morning hours with the children suffering with cancer, drawing and painting arts. About 60 Children within the age group of 4-12 years were provided with stationary, pastel and other necessities needed for painting. A cheerful atmosphere was created by the Rotaractors who actively got involved with the kids throughout the session. At the end, gifts were distributed among the kids while promises were made to use some of the paintings to print Vesak cards to be sold during the Vesak Festival 2016. We have made Vesak card to be sold to raise funds in order to aid the hospital to give these children a hope; a hand they could hold on to; to be the light that will guide them out of the darkness. Simply a Hand in Hand.

The session was marked a success and a promising journey to bring hope and happiness to people suffering from cancer.  The smiles and excitement that adored the faces of the kids during the session provided enough and more reason to go ahead with the next stages of the project. During the time that we spend in the hospital we saw their courage and hopefulness to live, a reason to live when all the odds are against them. That triggered a longing to do our best to build their world from dark to light. Remembering there is always a CAN in CAN-CER.
