Restoring the Beauty of Panadura Beach
There is nothing quite like spending a day by the beach! Nothing compares to the sound of the breaking waves, the salty air from the sea, and the boundless view of the water. However, lately, when you go to enjoy the beauty of our lovely coastlines, the idyllic vision is increasingly marred by the increasing level of pollution. Indeed, it is becoming harder to ignore the scattered waste that washes up with the tide or gets left behind on the sand.
Stepping Up for the Coastline
We decided it was time to step up and act. Recently, we gathered at Panadura Beach with a shared mission to roll up our sleeves and give back to the coastline we love. This massive cleanup effort was organized by the Rotaract Club of District 3220, and we were incredibly proud to participate as the Rotaract Club of University of Moratuwa.
From the very start, our purpose was clear. Armed with trash bags, gloves, and a great deal of enthusiasm, we spread out across the beach.
Four Hours, Tangible Impact
It is always eye-opening to witness the amount of garbage that finds itself in the oceans. In our case, for instance, most of the trash that we collected turned out to be glass and plastic. Though we also found some bigger wastes that people threw away, what proved to be the biggest problem was cleaning up the endless number of plastic bottles, plastic wrappings, and glass pieces scattered within the sand.
Such garbage is extremely dangerous. On one hand, sharp pieces of broken glass can be dangerous to people who go to the beach barefooted. On the other hand, plastic turns into toxic microplastic pieces that harm marine animals. Therefore, collecting all those tiny things one by one felt very satisfying. This waste could no longer hurt anyone or marine creatures.
The Bigger Picture
Despite the daunting task, the energy at the beach was amazing. There is something special about the bond that gets built among people who come together to do good. We worked tirelessly for four hours and the difference at Panadura Beach was evident right away.
However, a beach cleanup is just a temporary fix if we do not change our daily habits. The real take-away from this four-hour project is that every single piece of glass and plastic we picked up once belonged to someone. It makes us realize that our everyday decisions like saying no to single-use plastics, bringing reusable bags, and properly disposing of glass bottles have a direct and lasting impact on our environment.
A huge thank to the organizers at Rotaract Club of District 3220 for putting together such an impactful initiative, and to all the dedicated volunteers who showed up and brought such great energy to the day. Let’s keep working together to keep our shores clean, one piece of trash at a time!
